The mechanism, stated precisely
Prolonged standing on an unyielding surface produces discomfort and fatigue in the lower limbs and lower back. That much is well established in the ergonomics literature and it matches what anybody who has done it will tell you.
The proposed mechanism is postural. Standing still means holding a narrow range of positions with the same muscles loaded continuously, and it means the calf muscle pump, which returns venous blood from the legs, largely stops. A compliant surface introduces slight instability, which produces continuous small adjustments in ankle and hip position. Those adjustments keep the pump working and distribute load across time rather than concentrating it.
That is as far as the honest version goes. Discomfort and fatigue are what a compliant surface addresses. They are not the same thing as a musculoskeletal disorder, and matting suppliers who elide the two are overclaiming.
The controls, in the order the law expects
If this is a workplace rather than a garage, there is a hierarchy and matting is not at the top of it. Working through it in order is also what a risk assessment is supposed to show.
- Remove the standing. Can the task be done seated, or at a sit-stand position? A tall stool at a bench covers a surprising amount of assembly, inspection and light machining work.
- Reduce the duration. Job rotation, so nobody spends a whole shift at the same static position.
- Fix the position itself. Working height, reach distances, whether people are stooping or holding their arms up. These cause more harm than the floor does.
- Then the surface. Once standing is unavoidable and the position is right, what is underfoot is the remaining variable, and it is the cheapest of the four to change.
Why matting is last but still worth doing
Because the first three are often genuinely impossible. A welding bay cannot be done seated. A packing position with a conveyor at a fixed height cannot be rotated away if there are two people on the shift. A one-person fabrication shop cannot job rotate with itself.
In those situations the surface is the only control left, and it is the one HSE names. Their guidance on lower limb disorders lists prolonged standing among the tasks that make those disorders more common and gives anti-fatigue matting as an example of protective provision.
What that does not mean is that matting is required by law. Nothing requires it by name. We have written that up properly in a separate piece because too many suppliers get it wrong.
Specifying it so it does not create a new problem
- Bevelled edges on every open edge. An unbevelled mat edge across a working area is a trip hazard, and regulation 12 of the Workplace Regulations is specifically about things on the floor that cause slips and trips.
- Heavy enough not to move. A deck that creeps under foot traffic is worse than bare floor.
- Sized to the position with an overhang. Standing half on and half off an edge for hours undoes the point of it.
- Matched to what is on the floor. Oil needs a gritted surface, standing water needs a drainage grid. Putting a solid mat on a wet floor creates a slip surface, and that criticism of interlocking matting is fair when it applies.
If there is oil or coolant on your floor as well, the surface has to grip and thickness alone will not do it. Slippery and oily floors.
Questions people ask
- How long is too long to stand?
- There is no legal figure and anybody quoting one to you has invented it. What is well supported is that continuous static standing is harder than standing with movement, and that discomfort accumulates over a shift rather than arriving all at once. The practical test is what your own people report at the end of a shift.
- Is standing worse than sitting?
- They fail differently. Prolonged sitting and prolonged standing both cause problems, and both are improved by the same thing, which is variation. The answer to a static standing position is rarely a static seated one.
- Do anti-fatigue mats reduce sickness absence?
- We do not know, and neither does anyone else selling them. The percentages you will find quoted in this category trace back to suppliers rather than to research. What is supported is reduced discomfort and fatigue during a shift, which is worth having on its own terms.
